The Australian Community and the Australian Consulate in Chennai
have been hosting the Melbourne Cup Fashion Design Competition since 2011. This
charity event acts as a fundraiser to offer financial support to various Medical
and Educational Facilities. This year’s gala provided a platform for aspiring
Fashion Designers to showcase their collection for a cause.
On 25th of October, 2014 students from various
colleges presented their creations in front of a panel of esteemed judges. The
jury panel comprised of Vivek Karunakaran, Minnie Menon and Sidney Sladen.
Participants included Fashion Design students from NIFT, Pearl and WLCI College,
amongst many others leading Fashion & Apparel Design Institute of Chennai.
A unique blend of innovation and inspiration stunned the
panel when WLCI Students presented their work. With inspiration stemming from the stallion
races of Melbourne, models were seen adorning traditional head gears and
vibrant garments.
The winners of the competition are to be announced on November
04th, 2014. Stage will be set at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chennai on
the occasion of the Fundraiser Lunch. Along with a cash award, winners will get
the opportunity to have their collection walk the ramp amidst the collections
of renowned local and international designers.
WLCI College is proud to announce that of the many participants,
2 of WLCI Chennai students have been shortlisted for the honor. Ms Priyanga
Jayaraman and Mr Backia Raj are the chosen budding designers for the accolade.
We wish them luck in this undertaking and are sure that they will rise
to the occasion and stand out in style !
